Nevada Passes Law that Allows for Interstate Online Poker

Late last week, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval signed into law a watershed amendment to the State’s online poker law. The law, as amended, is the first of its kind to allow for interstate poker online.  Specifically, the amendment permits the governor to reach agreements with other states that legalize online gaming to allow for joint player pools with residents of those states.

With Delaware already allowing intrastate poker online (and state officials indicating an openness to creating joint player pools), and New Jersey close behind in terms of legalizing online poker, Nevada’s new law could have a significant impact.  While federal legislation could pre-empt this move eventually, federal bills have been languishing for over a year with no deadline for consideration, let alone passage, in sight.

Nevada’s recent legislative move marks a turning point in online gaming law, and is of the utmost importance to all gaming attorneys and those interested in Internet poker law in general.
