New Jersey Adopts Online Gaming Law

After New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s second veto of a bill that would have legalized online poker (as well as other online casino games) to be played by individuals within the State of New Jersey, there was rampant optimism that the New Jersey State legislature would quickly address Governor Christie’s concerns and put an amended online gaming bill before him.

Today, the New Jersey State legislature delivered, and Governor Christie signed the amended online gaming bill into law.  Under the New Jersey law, operators of online gaming websites must be New Jersey State brick and mortar casino companies located in Atlantic City, and players must be physically present in the State of New Jersey.  Due to the fact that the law just passed today, New Jersey will likely still require several months before actual online poker and online casino games are up and running.

Nevertheless, New Jersey’s action today is a watershed moment for all gaming attorneys, as well as those interested in Internet poker law in general.
