New Jersey Sports Gambling Law Alienates NCAA

The decision to begin issuing licenses for New Jersey sports gambling in early January 2013, pursuant to a bill signed into law last January, has compelled the NCAA to relocate six championships in five different sports that had been scheduled to take place in New Jersey.

NCAA Sports Gambling Policy

The NCAA has a policy prohibiting championship events from taking place in states that permit betting on single games. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie criticized the NCAA action, and defended the merits of the New Jersey sports gambling law. Christie’s position suggests that, despite this drawback, New Jersey is moving ahead with its new sports gambling initiative.
