New Jersey Sets Go-Live Date for Online Gaming

pa-sweep-onlineFollowing the passage of a law that legalized online poker (as well as other online casino games) within the State of New Jersey in February of this year, New Jersey regulators anticipate giving the green light to certain Internet gaming websites on or about November 23, 2013.

Under the New Jersey law, operators of online gaming websites must be New Jersey State brick and mortar casino companies located in Atlantic City (though online gaming companies can partner up with land-based casinos), and players must be physically present in the State of New Jersey.  It is expected that, initially, up to 12 New Jersey brick and mortar casinos will offer Internet gaming in partnership with online gaming companies.  It is worth noting that Wynn Resorts Ltd. recently joined the wave of companies seeking licenses for online gaming in New Jersey.

Prospective Internet gaming website operators hope to avoid some of the technical glitches and game-play issues that have, thus far, hampered Nevada’s first online poker site, but with the Nevada example as a model to learn from, they remain hopeful.

Regardless, when New Jersey gives the go-ahead in late November (or shortly thereafter), it will prove to be a watershed moment for Internet gaming, Internet gaming attorneys and those interested in Internet poker and gaming law in general.
